Skein, operated by TeZe Ltd. Last updated: August 2026
The short version
Skein is a native Mac app that runs entirely on your device. It does not require an account, does not contain analytics or tracking, and does not collect or transmit your personal data or the contents of your notes. Your notes are ordinary Markdown files that stay in the folder you chose on your Mac (and in iCloud or another location only if you put them there yourself).
The app
Skein reads and writes Markdown files (.md) in a folder you select. It works fully offline. The app makes no network requests, sends no telemetry, and includes no advertising or third-party tracking software. We never see your notes.
The only exception is deliberate: the buttons under Settings → About open links in your web browser. Nothing is sent when you press them beyond the ordinary request your browser makes for that page.
Skein builds a local index of your vault so that search, backlinks and the local graph are fast, and it keeps a short version history of each note so recent edits can be recovered. Both live on your Mac, in ~/Library/Application Support/Skein, and neither ever leaves your device. The index is derived entirely from your own files: delete it and Skein rebuilds it. Version history is not derived from anything — it holds earlier states of your own notes, kept for up to 30 days, and you can delete it yourself at any time.
So that your notes turn up in Spotlight alongside the rest of your Mac, Skein passes note titles, the opening lines of each note and any frontmatter tags to macOS’s own local search index. Full note bodies are not included. This is a system index on your own machine; nothing is sent anywhere, and macOS’s own privacy settings govern it.
This website
The skeinnotes.app website records an anonymous count of downloads so we can understand how many people are using Skein. This count is not linked to you and does not identify you. Like most websites, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (such as IP address and request time) for security and reliability; these are not used to track or profile you and are not combined with any other data.
We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Email you send us
If you email us (for example, to report a bug or send feedback at hello@teze.app), we keep your message and contact details only to respond to you and to improve Skein. We do not use them for marketing and do not share them with third parties except where needed to provide our email service.
Your rights
Because Skein does not collect personal data through the app, in most cases we hold no personal data about you. Where we do hold personal data (for example, an email you sent us), UK data protection law gives you rights to access, correct, or delete it, and to object to or restrict its processing. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@teze.app.
